Mississippi Marsh Redfish
Rick Lauman guided me through the Mississippi Marsh
in his hand-made custom flats boat this weekend and I had one great time. See the article link for a
description of this trip.

Rick Lauman lands Redzilla!
If you came to the July meeting you will remember
Rick Lauman was a guide that came to visit us and gave us a little pitch
about his guiding. Mostly what Rick did was work us up
with stories of giant redfish in the Biloxi Marsh. Rick "hung out" with us
all the way to the "meeting" after the meeting which is customarily held
in the parking lot. He must have influenced some members quite a bit because
when we met up for the GI trip there were some enormous crab flys
that were tied "because Rick said the big fish like big crabs". Well if you
check out the photo below you will know that Rick was telling us the truth
about monster redfish in the Biloxi Marsh (and apparently not pulling
our legs about the big crabs either!).
Rick caught this 36lb "Redzilla" the last weekend in August. I just got this
updated photo from Rick and he provided the following re-cap:
The day I caught the 36, I was fishing with a writer
friend of mine. I poled him around for 2 hours and he
got shots at over 20 fish over 20 pounds. Just one
hook up and it got off. The fish were acting a little
crazy. As luck would have it when my turn came I got
on the front and within 5 minutes a pair of slobs swam
up and I fed the big one. The fight was about 5
minutes on an 8wt on 20# tippet. He ate a new crab ive
been tying- super big profile but still small enough
to throw on the 3wt. I had been fishing a 6# IGFA set
up and had just switched so we could boat a big fish
to take pictures. Dont know if they are going to give
me the record as I released the fish after weighing,
measuring, photo'ing him. Current state rules require
killing the fish to submit and at this point I just
cant do that. The guys at Dept of Marine Rewsources
were really cool about it and said they were going to
propose changes to be more similar to IGFA so we can
release these big fish and still get credit.
2005 Sheepshead Record
A photo of the current MS Sheepshead fly-fishing record found on The Chandeleur Outfitters site photos page
Mississippi saltwater records can be viewed at State Salt Water Fly Fishing Tackle RecordsSomething disturbs about those saltwater records, there are no Magnolia Fly Fishers on there! That Pinfish record looks gettable to me...Tommy Shropshire with MS River Cat caught while "Ballooning" with a Flyrod!
GI Weekend Redfish
This was one of two legal reds caught at GI Weekend in July. This one hit a green "Lefleur's Charlie". I saw him bust the surface then used Kirby Lacour's trick of sneaking up on him coming straight in to the sun to keep from making a shadow. Thanks Kirby, I owe this fish to you. I met Kirby when he gave a program at the Memphis Fly Fishing show. Kirby guides in the marshes East of NOLA 504-464-1697
Fishing the rock
This is our esteemed President fishing for white bass and stripers. Note the location of his flyline, those darn fish will stack in one spot and that was it. I know, I tried all the other white water and all the fish that day were caught by that rock.
Calling Panther Bass
Albert Wood with a bass he caught at Calling Panther while casting a bream fly. Note the trees, that lake hates flyrods.

Mississloppy Striped Bass June 2006
Mississloppy Skipjack
Skipjack caught in April, see ole man river in the background. No stripers caught, did see one big one chasing shad. The wind was ripping across, the river. I had a Yankee uncle that used to refer to our state as Missisloppy to tease his nephews, but that weekend, the Mississippi was the Mississloppy. Water level was right, clarity was good, but that wind, oh that wind...

Bee Lake Slab
This is one of many caught at Bee Lake on April 1, by Albert Wood. The spawn is on!
Calling Panther Bream
Don't miss out on the big bream at Calling Panther, but practice your roll cast because there are trees everywhere!
Now that's what I'm talking about!
A mess of nice bream from Calling Panther. All fly caught, makes'em even sweeter when you fry'em up.
